Noam Chomsky Makes the RTD!

It’s good to see the Richmond Times-Dispatch chipping in and doing its part to raise Noam Chomsky‘s Amazon rankings.  On Wednesday, the Times-Dispatch referred to the MIT linguist as an “American leftist” in an editorial recounting the history of anti-American United Nations speeches by foreign leaders.

Chomsky probably would resist that label, insofar as it might imply a statism utterly opposed to his libertarian-anarchist sensibilities, but I suppose as a generic descriptive comment it’s not in itself too misleading. But I think you have to read the RTD every day to grasp what a biting put-down the word “leftist” is intended by the editorialists to be.

I wonder if any of those editorialists have actually read any of Chomsky’s trenchant analyses of American power, or are capable of providing a point-by-point response without resorting to the use of put-down labels?

For what it’s worth, the RTD’s editorial appears to be entirely (or almost entirely) derivative of an article in the New York Times Week in Review ten days ago which also recounted the history of anti-American speeches in the UN.
